Overview
This was a personal game I built for Xbox LIVE Indie Games. After Chalked I needed something with a bit of a quicker turn-around; something to calm my brain. I decided to try my hand at creating something from the old days of green computer monitor screens. I limited myself by having to mostly create everything from the use of 1 or 2 pixel squares. I used a green square and a black square, then varied the opacity on them to get slight shades to help push certain scenes. I ended up using a few full images, but a good 99% of the game is built on text and 2 1x1 color pixels. In the final build there is 10 images (including the 2 1x1 green and black pixels).
The Player controls a space ship and is to patrol a set bandwidth. Rockets slowly try to leave the atmosphere and when they breach it, an alert is sent to the Player. The Player can thrust left or right and move up and down. The Player has to use their radar and shoot down the rockets. Shooting down a rocket will increase the Players score, although upgrading their ship's weapons or purchasing items will decrease their score. Firing bullets will even cost the Player a few score points (depending on the fire power). The Player has to find a balance between what fire power is needed to get the job done at that time.
The music is played on a seperate thread by use of a grid system of sound effects. The loop counter slowly loops through the grid and if it hits certain nodes, it will play that corresponding sound effect - creating music. The Player is free to fully edit this to create their own ambient music.
